1.
My big mouth, what was I thinking Four AM, who was I kidding My parents were right 'bout all of their doubts Letting me have a paper route (and that's as much as I have at this point)
2.
My big mouth, what was I thinking Four AM, who was I kidding My parents were right about all their doubts But I begged and begged for a paper route My first stop is Mrs. McCarthy And she don't tip if I am tardy I pedal my bike fast as I can It's darker outside than a frying pan My big mouth, what was I thinking Four AM, who was I kidding My parents were right about all their doubts But I begged and begged for a paper route Well maybe this time he'll be on his leash Benny the bulldog, he hates me I gently set the paper down But Benny, he hears me anyhow Oh my big mouth, what was I thinking Four AM, who was I kidding My parents were right about all their doubts But I begged and begged for a paper route Well just my luck the rain starts pouring I think of my friends still in bed snoring And the mamas and the papas Their sons and daughters Are counting on me come hell or high water I don't know what I was thinking Four AM, the devil's still sleeping My parents were right, but I can't pout I'm a kid on a mission with a paper route Mmm/Instrumental My big mouth, what was I thinking Four AM, who was I kidding My parents were right, but I can't pout I'm a kid on a mission with a paper route I'm a kid on a mission with a paper route

about

SOME CONTEXT:

As you can hear in Paper Route _IDEA1 this song began really slow. I eventually sped it up in Paper Route_WORKTAPE to feel like a kid in a hurry, pedaling on his bike.

In Paper Route_MIX_B (this is the studio version) you can hear how I cleaned up some of lyrics. For example, the line in Paper Route_WORKTAPE, "My parent were right about all their doubts" sings very clumsily. I knew that wasn't working so changed it to "My parents were right, but I can't pout."

I also felt like the kid needed a bit more agency so he didn't come across too pathetic. Even having a moment of belief in the work he was doing. Getting the news to people. So I changed lines from "can't pout" to "won't pout" toward the end of the song.

One other thing that might be interesting. David Welsh (mix engineer) added the high-hats, right after the verse about Benny the bulldog. He said it made him think of "playing cards on bicycle spokes" to give the impression of a kid speeding away, ha! I love that he did that.

Love,
Aaron

Aaron Espe Nashville, Tennessee

I'm probably what Bob Ross would sound like if he'd been a singer-songwriter. Calming, positive music with a hint of sadness.
