about

This is Track 1 (probably) off my upcoming concept album about northern Minnesota. Why does it have those ugly underscores and all caps? Because it’s not final. “How Were the Roads?_MIX_A” means this is my mixer’s (David Welsh) first attempt to get all the levels right. The process goes from production (me) to mixing (David) to mastering (Brian Joseph).

“How were the roads?” is a question people in the upper Midwest are familiar with. It’s usually the first thing someone asks you after you’ve handed them your bulky coat (which they will lay on a bed somewhere) and heeled off your snowy boots. The question eases the pain of awkward conversation. It allows for a little “travel talk” while you warm up. In a sense, we’re all hobbits. We never leave the shire. So when a visitor arrives, they have the allure of Gandalf. “How were the roads?” is an invitation to tell a story.

lyrics

Well come on in
Let me take your coats
Glad you could make it
How were the roads?
Come on in
Make yourselves at home
Sure good to see you
How were the roads?

Can you believe how cold it’s been?
Since, who knows, I can’t remember when
We’ve got coffee
Hot coco
Sure good to see you
How were the roads?

Oh, not too bad
Just a few rough patches
Of ice between here and there
The rest was fair
And here we are
We made it

Hello, daughter
Hello, son
Did you make it to
Your destination?
Thanks for calling
On the phone
So good to hear you
How were the roads?

about

Aaron Espe Nashville, Tennessee

I'm probably what Bob Ross would sound like if he'd been a singer-songwriter. Calming, positive music with a hint of sadness.
