Songs are a way for me to explore ideas that sound absurd. Ideas I can’t put into words on their own. So that’s what I’m doing here in this song. In the novel Grand Opening by my favorite author, Jon Hassler, the 12-year-old character Brendan says, “Dear God, let people live” after the death of his friend Dodger. I set the book down and wrote that line in my notebook. Years later when a friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer, I remembered that line and wrote this song.
